Global screen sector coalition calls on governments to protect local content

TORONTO, September 11, 2026 — A coalition of 23 screen sector organizations from across the globe released a joint statement today at the Toronto International Film Festival, urging governments worldwide to support domestic production requirements and champion the diverse stories created by local independent production.

The group of industry associations, representing more than 750,000 workers across Canada, Australia and Europe, cautioned that without domestic content rules, the ubiquity of global streaming services puts local stories at risk. The statement was also published as a full-page ad in Friday’s TIFF edition of The Hollywood Reporter.

“Streaming has upended the way content gets commissioned, produced and seen, but domestic policies have not kept pace,” said Reynolds Mastin, President and CEO, CMPA. “Canada, like so many countries around the world, needs updated laws and regulations for the digital world, and we each look to our respective governments to stand up for our cultural sovereignty.”
